Do you know what’s on your Georgia driving record? Before you say “yes”, think about it – when was the last time you actually saw a copy? While most of us do a good job of keeping track of our driving history, we – and for that matter, the folks at the DDS – are only human. It’s all too easy to forget about that parking ticket we got last June, and it’s all too common for DDS personnel to make mistakes and not properly update our records. That’s why it’s a good idea to periodically check your Georgia Driving History Report (also called the Georgia MVR). Here’s why you should, and how you can get a copy.
Your Georgia MVR is a complete report of your driving history – by that, we mean a record of any and all citations you’ve received. The MVR will show you the number of points you have on your record, any reported accidents you’ve had, any tickets that you’ve received, and any license suspensions or revocations. Insurance companies will look to your MVR to determine your rates, and employers, schools or courts may request copies of your MVR. That’s why it’s important to make sure that it’s accurate.
The easiest way to get a copy of your Georgia MVR is by ordering it online. You can do so at the Georgia DDS website. To order your Georgia driving record online, you’ll first need to establish a secure account with the DDS, which you’ll do on their website. There are two versions of your report that you can order – an online/viewable non-certified copy and a certified version. You’ll need to make sure you get the one you need. The state of Georgia offers you the option of getting a 3-year or 7-year version of the document.
Viewable (Non-certified) Georgia Driving History Report: When you order this version, you’ll be able to view it online and download it for 30 days after the date requested. Be aware that this is a non-certified version; that means that anyone who’s requested that you provide them with a copy (such as your insurance company or a potential employer) may not accept this version.
Certified Georgia Driving History Report: This is the “official” version of your Georgia driving record, stamped and certified by the DDS. When you order it, you order a printed copy that will be sent to the address that you request. (The DDS does give you the option to send the report directly to a 3rd party.)
You can also get a certified copy of your Georgia MVR at any Georgia DDS office. You’ll need to bring proper identification. The Georgia DDS also allows you to order copies by mail.
