After School Program

Mission Statement

The Centenary After School Program is a tutoring and nurturing program intended to reach elementary school students who have a need for individual help with schoolwork or adjusting to the school environment. It is an area where the children feel accepted and safe.

Vision

That children and their families will develop a greater love for themselves and others, through the care and love shown to them and the After School Ministry of Centenary United Methodist Church.

• The children will be treated with respect and attention, in order that they recognize their self-worth, and that of their peers.
• The children will take part in activities at Centenary to the extent that parents allow.
• Children shall be accepted into the program regardless of religion, race or creed.
• Children may be referred by Interfaith Refugee Ministries, a parent, or a teacher.
• Tutors are volunteers who demonstrate their love of children. They need not be professionals but do need to know where to go for guidance if they need assistance in academic matters.
• The ratio of student to teacher shall be 2:1 whenever possible - although the teacher may temporarily guide 3-4 at the same grade level, or during a group activity.
• We will abide by "Safe Sanctuary" policies as put forth by the United Methodist Church.
• While we will not teach religion, the tutors will model "Judao-Christian" behavior and morals, and answer questions about faith should they arise, (or refer child to a clergyperson for answers".
• Refugee children in the program will be assisted primarily with language skills, and materials will be provided to other family members to not only help the child but improve the adjustment of the family.
• The family of each child will be encouraged to visit the church initially when the child is enrolled, and when their child is taking part in an activity. Parents are always welcome to visit.
• Since this is an outreach ministry, there will be no fees for After School Program activities.
