How to Get a Massachusetts Driver’s License: The Ultimate Guide

Massachusetts Driver's License

Getting a Massachusetts driver’s license involves a number of steps. If you’ve never held a license before, you’ll have to start out by getting a learner’s permit, then a junior license, and then finally an unrestricted license. If you’re over 18, the process is a bit different.

We’ll go through all you need to know in this guide.

Learner’s Permit

The first step is getting a learner’s permit, which is valid for two years. Before you can start the application for your permit, you must be at least age 16; and if you’re under 18 you must have parental consent.

To receive your learner’s permit, you first need to pass the written exam. There are 25 questions and you need to answer at least 17 correctly to pass. The exam is currently offered online, but you should know that about 50% fail their test nation-wide, so you need to come prepared.

Once you have your permit, you may drive under the supervision of a licensed adult who is at least 21 years old and has had their license for at least one year. You need to log at least 40 hours of supervised driving before you may sit the road test.
